Wheelin’ Sportsmen: National Wild Turkey Federation’s Adaptive Hunting Program

Robin Clark’s accident in 1970 left the boy paraplegic, forever changing the idyllic farm-kid lifestyle he’d enjoyed. But he never let the loss of the use of his legs stop him from living his life, always stretching the boundaries of what’s possible in a wheelchair. But when you’re wheelin’, there’s just some boundaries that you can’t conquer alone. Turkey hunting in the backwoods, for example.
Twenty-five years ago, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) conceived an idea: an adaptive program to help people with mobility impairments enjoy the outdoors by participating in hunting and shooting sports. They named it Wheelin’ Sportsmen, and it hosts events to provide participants hunting opportunities they may not be able to have on their own. Oftentimes, the knowledge and experience gained at one of these events allows the participants to continue hunting on their own throughout the year.
