Conservationists Outraged by Wolf Relisting
Scientifically managed predator conservation–and our elk populations–just took a major blow.
Recently, a federal judge in California ruled to restore federal protections to gray wolf populations in the Lower 48. This flies in the face of scientifically sound predator management, and America’s conservationists are outraged. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) has been monitoring the effects of wolf reintroduction, and they have some words of warning for those who would ignore the facts.
“Scientists, biologists and professional wildlife managers agree that wolf populations are stable and growing,” said Kyle Weaver, RMEF president and CEO. “As such, they should remain under the umbrella of state management since state wildlife agencies successfully manage all other wildlife in line with the North American Wildlife Conservation Model through regulated hunting and trapping.”
The science community under both the Obama and Trump administrations previously determined wolves to be a recovered species and removed populations from Endangered Species Act protections in 2011 and 2020. Yet both times, judges intervened to frustrate the process.
Wolf population estimates fly in the face of the latest ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White of Oakland. They are well above state management plan levels in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin while topping all-time modern day levels in Oregon and Washington. Additionally, there are established wolf packs in California, Colorado and verified sightings in other states.
As a matter of information, there are also 7,000-11,000 wolves in Alaska and approximately 60,000 in Canada.
“The process is broken. Science speaks for itself and yet again and again we see that chronic, frivolous litigation continues and thwarts proven science-based, state-led wildlife management,” added Weaver.
Radical environmental groups also called for the restoration of ESA protections in the Northern Rockies where estimated wolf populations are 900 percent above minimum recovery levels in Idaho, 700 percent above in Montana and more than 200 percent in Wyoming. The ruling, however, does not affect wolves in those states where populations remain under state management.

I’m willing to see you prove MITBAR52. Go sit in the woods unarmed & video record it. Many had the same thought as you. Guess what they no longer breathing. I seem to remember someone thinking the same about bears. lol
Actually you need to read the DNR statistics in Michigan. They worn hunting dog owners about the dogs that are being killed by wolves here. Rabbit hunters on Drummond Island lost their dogs to wolves also.

This author tries to site science, but doesn’t actually site any science. I love shooting and hunting, but you are a complete idiot. The wolves are actually helping bring ecosystems back to balance as many of the herd herbivores have a tendency to mess up too much soil with their hooves and plants never get a chance to grow with their grazing. Biodiversity is NECESSARY, and the wolves increase the biodiversity, they should be protected and you are a liar and a fool for stating science says otherwise. Also I am a supporter of increased carbon emissions, you know why, because look at the quality of earth soil that dates back to 70 million years ago, the dinosaurs actually had a HUGE level of biodiversity and earths biomass was absolutely astounding. Their carbon footprint was huge and it lead to raised temperatures, increased ocean size, increased rainfall(less desert land), more dense forests, and a healthier planet. Also another fun fact, ice ages did not happen because of the large carbon footprint, the world was in its prime. The people trying to lower carbon footprints to save the world from global warming have it all backwards, we need more of a footprint to restore the natural order.
You obviously don’t live around wolves. And, many plant species require the tread of cloven hooves to thrive.
Hard to take seriously anyone who tries to write a serious comment and yet repeatedly misspells the same, simple, four letter word (cite).
IOW…blah blah blab blah blah.
A typo “worn” for warn, once is not a tragedy, it was repeated by the following post. It appears that you may have mis-spelled your nom-de-plume, Stickler, eh?
Jared, stop smoking weed man. You are the one way off base.
You are right Bev.I have been around them quite a bit.I have a female now that will be a year old in a month. She is actually is 7/8 gray wolf and Malamute. She is a sweetheart.
Wolves are not evil, they actually helped yellowstone recover it’s balance. They will do the same in other wildlife settings also. Have any of you actually had personal contact with a wolf? I have and they are shy, family oriented to their pack, and hunt only to eat unlike some sports people I know.
They need to be preserved, nature takes care of curbing their over population. Defenders of wild life helps farmers and such that get adversally impacted by them. So take a break, live and let live.

I’ve had plenty contact. One friend lost 26 hear of cattle, another over 300 head of sheep ran over a cliff. A herd of 23 elk were maimed in Idaho, none killed, but had to be put down by fish and game. Elk have been nearly eliminated in my area, and a moose is seldom seen. Your PETA talking points don’t hold up to reality.
Hunt only to eat you say?… I’ve lived in wolf country ever since they were reintroduced, and have seen several. You are right about them being shy around humans. But I have seen lots of deer and elk that were killed by wolfs, some had only a few bites taken out of them, some weren’t eaten at all. Obviously it doesn’t happen all the time, But wolfs most definitely kill just for the sake of killing. And in many areas have completely demolished the elk herds to the point that they are nonexistent in those areas. Wolfs definitely need to be managed.
Thank goodness these conservationist weren’t around 65 million years ago, we’d be up to our necks in velociraptors!
Well I guess we’ll just have to use the 3 S system, shoot scoop and shovel.
The three S system is Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up.
If I lived where they where. I would take care of business. 3 System.
reading your article on the elk population taking ablow because wolves are not federally protected by the ESa. In your article all I read is a crybaby attitude that elk and deer willbe endangered! Your stats of wolves in Alaska and Canada are highly skewed! And what about the blood bath taking place in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho! I used to like your website as it has good info. Now I am dumping your site as I read nothing about how the killing of wolves has been stopped in the lower 48. I live in Michigan and there is no predication here The wolves are not killing cattle or little dogs and the like. DNR stats will verify that. It looks that you are a sorry ass because more killing fields have been take away from you! The RMEF is just another kiling organization and cant accept that old and sick elk is the principle meal for wolves! Quit crying and sell the roses ! For once wolves may have a chance to live in peace from the likes of you
Another far leftist judge who’s listening only to animal worshipping cults who makeup data, lie, and use emotion.
These animal/ wolf worshipping cults are run mostly by women, who appeal to big city rich women in new York City and San Francisco for money donations. It is a big fund raising business with these groups making millions every year.
These groups will show videos of “tame” or “drugged” wolves being petted and kissed and then tell people that the wolves are harmless to humans.
During WW2, wolves population got so huge, in Europe, that they were attacking people in villages in Europe. Several countries had to divert their soldiers from battle to fight off the wolves attacking people, using machine guns, hand gernades and tanks!
Chapstick had a article in one of his books.about wolf attacks. If a wolf can kill a deer or elk, what chance does a unarmed human have against them? One can also Google wolf attacks and find many human attacks.
Always carry a firearm when in national forests or wilderness areas. One never knows what “predator” will be waiting behind a tree for it’s next meal. Not only wolves, but there are black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, Badgers, wild hogs, pythons, anaconda snakes ( people who set loose “pets”). Some people have reported seeing or hearing “African lions” in national forests.
In SE Colorado, there is a “wild cat” sanctuary where there are 100’s of lions, tigers and cheetah, these were picked up from road side tourist attractions, circus and zoos that went out of business. All there is a fence keeping them on the property. Many people and ranches are worried about these animals escaping.
Outfitters in Idaho and Montana, who know and travel in wilderness areas, have seen the impact wolves have had on deer, antelope and elk herds. Where they had herds numbering in the hundreds, now only a dozen or so few lone animals. One wolf will kill a deer or elk every week, times that by hundreds of wolves and deer and elk numbers drop off, and so do hunting opportunities. Many areas the Fish & Game department have cut back on hunting due to wolves killing so many deer and elk.
These wolf worshipping cults want to put wolves in all of the lower 48 states. They want to do this to stop all big game hunting. They say the wolves eat the excess game and so no more hunting is needed and hunting should be banned. In fact, the gun banning groups are joining up with the hunting banning groups to ban all hunting in America. Their idea is, if all hunting is banned, then all hunting guns should be banned. See how these groups work?
These gun banning groups and hunting banning groups are run and funded by Micheal Bloomberg, George Soros, the Chinese government, the U.N., Russia, North Korea and Mexico.
Remember that a country cannot be taken over by foreign country if it’s citizens own firearms.
China wants Australia, New Zealand and America. In fact, China is buying up American farmland and ranch land.
During WW2 Germany and Japan had plans to invade the west coast and east coast of America. They also wanted Mexico to invade the southern states, promising Mexico they would give the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas back to Mexico.
But Germany, Japan and Mexico were afraid of all the Americans who owned firearms and who would fight them off. Now they are joining up to BAN all guns in America.
Protect and support your right to keep and own all types of firearms and accessories and to go hunting, fishing and trapping. Don’t allow the gun banning groups and hunting banning groups and far leftist politicians to restrict and ban firearms and hunting in America.
Buy more guns, ammo and accessories now before it’s too late.
It was WW1 that Germany tried to get Mexico to attack the US. And I would buy more ammo if I could find it. Even reloading supplies are scarce.
There are many websites selling all the ammo you need if you want to pay ridiculous prices. Reloading is out there too. You may have a problem finding certain components. Such as bullets for lever action rifles.
Mitbar52 and Daniel don’t know what they are talking about.Only the alpha male and alpha female in the pack breed and she only comes in estrus once a year. Normal litter 3to5 pups.
Wrong the alpha will breed with other females. Also if that’s all the pups each year how did population get so hi. Sss
Exactly!
They are just another predator pest that was not missed when they were gone. We have plenty without them.
Wolves are not maneaters. They prefer staying far away from people. But I agree each state should be able to make their own regulations. They know what’s best in their area.
Oh yea, tell yourself that when cornered by a pack.
You been watching too much TV

They are maneaters that no one missed when they were gone. We have enough predators without maneating wolves.
Leave it to the tree huggers and nonhunters crying to this Judge who obviously knows absolutely nothing about how management really works. I remember the outrage when President Trump kept them off the endangered list because he knew without hunters the Wolf was free to run wild and out produce the deaths that naturally occur. So basically this no nothing judge has givin the wolf 4 years of completely unchecked births and not 1 wolf can be hunted to keep them in check. So the Alpha Females can have their 2 or 3 litters and each year that will number 100 to 400 more wolves. Suddenly cattle farmers are going to be finding lots of fresh killed cattle meaning those costs get passed right along to us. Not to mention the number of Elk and Deer killed by them and obviously the number of Wolves killed on or highways and back roads will also increase dramatically. More Liberal stupidity
Another loss to conservationists. This is the worst mistake they could’ve done. All the revenue hunting brings in to majority of the states WILL be affected by this decision in the future! Huge mistake which I hope gets over turned soon!
They were here first, they deserve to live and not be eliminated!
Thats funny – kill the predators
Your comment reflects the problem here. No one is advocating wolf elimination, but that management reverts to management by the states where they exist. States manage their game EXCEPT when big government programs impose their will on states. State manage their game based on tried and tested management principles which are continually evaluated and updated/changed to meet changing circumstances. One size fits all approaches NEVER meet the needs of all states/regions in a state, nor all animal species. That is why populations of animals grow, remain healthy and are controlled in sustainable manner. Ignoring this makes some people FEEl superior, but almost always harms both the animals and the environment.
Ya’ll seen enough yet? Ya’ll know what needs to be done, Git r Dun!! NCSWIC, WWG1WGA, P.A.N.I.C.
I’d rather hunt a hunter than a wolf.
