So the loggers have been through your lease, and left clear-cuts behind. That’s actually a good thing for many game species, because deer and most other wild animals crave the food and cover that shoot up in the wake of a timber harvest. (This is the same reason that forest fires can be good for the habitat, actually!) Logging creates an opportunity to welcome that thermal and visual cover that the animals we love to hunt love to live in. Federal ambassador Josh Froelich explains what to do—and what not to do—after the loggers leave to maximize the benefits to both hunter and hunted.

I have recently purchases 5 acres in NH that had 2-3 acres clear cut about 10 years ago. The adjacent lots 50-70 acres were not cut. I put out a game cam, (still photos only) and had 46 of 92 photos with deer in them. most of them multiple of the same deer. There were 5 different males from a button buck to an 8 pointer. They were all around the excavation area dug for my septic test a 5’X10′ clear area. I plan on building in this area this year and will have 2/3s of the clear area undisturbed in back of the house.. The bottom 2+.acres are old growth forest with a stream running through the very bottom.
