We cover hunting, fishing, gear and getting outdoors. Most of what we publish has a safety or a legal edge to it, and this page is where we set that out.

This page says plainly what Popular Outdoorsman is for, what it is not for, how it makes money, and what you are responsible for. It applies to every page on this site. It sits alongside our terms of service and our privacy policy, and where those documents govern a subject, they control.

Who publishes this site

Popular Outdoorsman is published by Brand Avalanche Media, Inc., an Illinois corporation. Editorial decisions are made by our editors. Advertisers and sponsors do not review articles before publication and do not decide what we cover or what we conclude.

Everything on this site is published for general information. It is not legal, medical, veterinary, financial, tax, engineering or other professional advice, and reading it creates no professional relationship of any kind. Your situation has facts we do not know. Before you act on anything here, consult someone licensed to advise you in your own state.

Accuracy, dates and corrections

We name the source of the figures we publish and the date or edition they were read from. Published standards get revised, prices move, rules change, and manufacturers change specifications without notice. A page that was correct when it was written can be overtaken by events.

We do not guarantee that anything here is complete, current or free of error. If you find a mistake, tell us what page it is on, what is wrong, and where the right figure comes from, and we will correct the page itself rather than bury a note at the bottom.

• We are supported by advertising. Ads on this site are served by third parties and their presence is not an endorsement by us.
• No link on this site earns us a commission. We do not place affiliate links, and nothing you buy after clicking away from here pays us. When we link to a retailer or a manufacturer, it is so you can check the source or look at the thing for yourself.

We do not publish invented reviews, and we do not publish reviews written by anyone with a connection to the product that has not been disclosed. We do not pay for positive sentiment, we do not buy followers or engagement, and we do not suppress criticism to protect a commercial relationship. Where anyone connected to this company has a stake in something we cover, the page says so.

Links to other sites

We link to manufacturers, government agencies, standards bodies, retailers and other publishers. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it.

Names, trademarks and images

Product names, company names, logos and marks belong to their owners and are used here to identify and comment on the things we write about. Their use does not imply that we are affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any of those companies.

Firearms and ammunition

Read this part before you act on anything on this site.

• Safe handling is yours, every time. Treat every firearm as loaded, keep it pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target, and know what is beyond your target. Nothing here replaces the manual that came with your firearm or a qualified gunsmith who can put hands on it.
• Confirm the chambering stamped on the barrel matches the ammunition before you load it. Cartridges with similar names are not interchangeable, and some of them will chamber in the wrong firearm. Published industry standards exist for exactly this reason, and we point at them rather than paraphrasing them.
• Specifications here are for reference, not for gunsmithing. We do not publish instructions for manufacturing, converting or modifying a firearm, or for defeating any safety device, and nothing here should be read as such.
• The law differs by state, by county and sometimes by city, and it changes. That includes minimum age, what may be shipped to your address, transport, magazines, features and where you may carry. Federal law is a floor, not the whole picture. Check current law where you are before you buy, build, carry or travel.
• Eyes and ears, every time, and a range or a backstop that is actually safe.

Hunting, fishing and trapping

• Your state wildlife agency’s current publication is the authority, not this site. Seasons, bag and possession limits, zones, legal methods, tagging, transport and reporting change from year to year and sometimes mid-season.
• Federal rules sit on top of state rules for migratory birds and on federal land, and the two do not always say the same thing.
• Licenses, tags, permits, stamps and landowner permission are your responsibility. So is knowing where the property line is.
• We publish general guidance, not a legal opinion about your hunt. Check the current regulations before you go, every season.

Wild game handling

Wild game is not inspected. Field care, cooling and clean handling are entirely on the person who took the animal. Follow your state health department’s current guidance, including any disease testing or consumption advisory that applies where you hunted, and do not eat an animal that looked or behaved sick. Cook wild game to the published safe internal temperatures, measured with a thermometer.

Being outdoors

Hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, climbing, shooting and working outdoors carry real risk of injury and death, including from terrain, water, cold, heat, weather, wildlife, equipment failure and your own fatigue. We publish general guidance for a general audience. Assessing the conditions in front of you, your own fitness and skill, and whether to go at all is yours alone. Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
