WATCH: How the Steyr AUG Went All-American
Steyr’s AUG reigns as King of the Bullpup Rifles, and has since it was selected by the Austrian army in 1977. If you’re not familiar, the AUG A3 M1 is a civilian-legal variant that boasts all of the features demanded by Austrian defense forces. (Except full-auto fire capability, natch.) What has made the AUG so iconic–other than the fact that Steyr was the first to bring this brilliant platform to market? It’s about durability: Filthy weather and filthier ammo can’t keep the dual gas-adjustment settings from running like new no matter what. Matching yet opposed operation and stainless steel guide rods affixed to the bolt carrier glide effortlessly in the receiver. Short-stroke gas-piston operation runs clean…and runs circles around everyone else.
But how did this creation make its way from the edelweiss-bedecked mountains of Austria to the hearts of American shooters everywhere? Check out this awesome new video from Steyr Arms to find out–we bet you’ll learn some things you never knew.
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you that you can win a Steyr Scout in our Stay Home, Stay Safe $4.5K Guns & Gear Giveaway! Hosted by our sister publication, Guns and Gadgets Daily, it ends May 8, so don’t delay. Click here to enter.

Had a chance to get one back in 90s during first gun ban for $1500. Superior would not sign off on the paperwork since I was LEO. Figures, always dreamed of having one……
Question… i have wanted an AUG FOREVER! Which rail option is best? Isnthe long rail or the high rail necessary? I would probably mount a 1×4 or 1×6 tactical type scope.
Personally I’d go for the long rail if I was going to mount a scope.
I ended up getting one with the factory 3x scope and I’m happy with it. I also mounted a Holosun RDS that is similar to an Aimpoint T-2 on top of the factory scope.
If you are set on an LPVO, check out the Manticore Arms Talon Scope Mount.
It is lightweight and sleek and you don’t have to worry about what rail to match with your mount.
Made about 10 miles from my house in 2nd Amendment respecting Bessemer Alabama. ROLL TIDE!
I am left eye dominant and shoot more naturally off my left shoulder. I know that the original configuration was not easy or inexpensive enough to keep my interest. Has this issue been addressed?
I know that Beretta has a new design that converts easily with no additional cost.
Love my A3M1!
I have been a fan of Steyr rifles for thirty years and a SBS owner for twenty, not just innovation but consistent out of box unrivaled accuracy that’s hard to beat at any price. Glad the restrictions are behind them and now not just a U.S. importers but manufacturers as well, a long history to be proud of for sure.
